Tim Hawkinson

Tim Hawkinson was born in 1960 in San Francisco. He went to San Jose State University for his BFA and went to University of California for his MFA. His works are made of strange, usually recycled materials. He integrates sound into most of his pieces for example: http://75.101.145.29/art21/watch-now/segment-tim-hawkinson-in-time . His installation "Überorgan" shows his talent at creating complex pieces. This piece is a full functioning, stadium sized bagpipe made of only electric hardware and plastic sheets. A video of this piece is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJembozgSJ4&feature=related and here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eqa6QWd_mDk&feature=related . I am really attracted to the delicacy in all of Hawkinson's work. In one of his pieces he makes an egg out of his own fingernail clippings. His work spread across all ranges and are connected by the strange subject matter, detail, interesting materials, and commonly music. Although Hawkinson allows his pieces to be open ended for his viewers to fully engage and conclude their own meaning, there seems to be a theme of mortality, temporality and spirituality.
